Pattern of fat deposition- Waist to Hip Ratio

Pattern of fat deposition- Waist to Hip Ratio

Excess fat is deposited in different places in men and women.  In the case of men, fat is usually deposited in the area around the waist and neck (apple shaped body or “android obesity”) while in women excess fat is deposited in the thighs and hips (pear shaped body or “gynaecoid obesity”).  The waist-hip ratio is used to determine the deposition of fat in a person. To determine the waist to hip ratio (WHR), you must measure your waist at the point of the navel, while you measure the hips at the broadest part.

WHR= Measurement of waist / measurement of hips.

If your waist-hip ratio is not within the ideal range, it indicates an excess of body fat.

Values greater than or equal to 0.9 for men and greater than equal to 0.85 for women, indicate obesity and risk of disorders like diabetes, and heart ailments.
